The Cost of Improper Inspection

December 20, 2016

Detroit Medical Center's struggle with their Central Sterile Processing Department is well documented. Dating back to a decision in 2010, watch the events unfold on this timeline.

Would Digital Inspection Systems help?  Only time will tell.

Why Digital Inspection?

Using digital inspection equipment for your inspection needs allows the Central Service Technician a much clearer image of the instrument and higher detail of the defects and abnormalities.

With their High Definition cameras and monitors, the digital inspection equipment also minimizes eye strain for the technician.  Additionally, this takes out the variable of visual acuity between technicians, allowing for the individual technician to "customize" what level of magnification they require to properly inspect the instrumentation.

Why High Magnification?

"All surgical instruments must be inspected for cleanliness, stains, corrosion, cracks, breakage, and stiffness of movable parts before being placed in instrument sets. If possible, instruments should be checked under magnification because small pieces of bioburden or debris can otherwise be difficult to see."

As we age, we lose our visual acuity and this could have serious impacts on the instrument inspection process in Sterile Processing departments. Enhanced visual inspection is being talked about more and more-- and for good reason.
